30 Day Central American Adventure

Wednesday 01April
Melbourne - Los Angeles - Mexico City

WELCOME TO MEXICO – AT LAST!

In the way of The Inspired Traveller we begin the journey with high adventure - in Northwest Mexico's great Copper Canyon. We arrive first in the colonial city of Chihuahua. Its atmosphere is truly Mexican and deeply patriotic, with a remarkable history. Its remoteness from the traditional colonial heartland means that it sees fewer tourists and travellers than its counterparts, and is an appropriate place to begin this wonderful 25 day Central American journey.

Chihuahua's city center is filled with handsome colonial buildings, mansions, palaces, fine museums, and the homes of two of Mexico's most famous leaders.

Chihuahua is at the eastern end of the famous and breathtaking Copper Canyon railway.

We will be met at the airport and transferred to our chosen hotel.

A welcome cocktail party in the courtyard of an 110 year old mansion.

Celebration Dinner.

Accommodation: Palacio del Sol

Thursday 02 April Chihuahua - Copper Canyon Train

Let’s get underway with one of the world’s most scenic railroad journeys, ascending to a maximum height of 2400 metres and descending through the canyons and valleys of the Sierra Madre mountain range.

Barranca del Cobre, the "Copper Canyon" is really a series of more than 20 spectacular canyons, which altogether comprise a region that’s four times larger than the Grand Canyon. The entire Copper Canyon region comprises almost a third of the state of Chihuahua, which is Mexico's largest state. The principal canyon is the awe inspiring Urique Canyon, which will be traversed by the Chihuahua al Pacifico Railroad. Eventually, all of the rivers which formed the Copper Canyons merge into the Rio Fuerte which continues across the adjacent state of Sinaloa, emerging near the City of Los Mochis on the Sea of Cortez.

A full day visiting the, Archeological site of Teotihuacan and the Shrine of Guadalupe.

Few cities in the world have been considered worthy of being inhabited by Gods but Teotihuacan is such a city. A thousand years of civilization, which today can still be felt along its wide avenues that project out towards the cardinal points of the universe.

The archeological site of Teotihuacan is one of the most impressive sites of the Aztec World. Located only one hour outside of Mexico City, we will have the chance to explore this Aztec treasure. Climb the magnificent Pyramids of the Sun and the Moon. See the Butterflies Temple, the Avenue of the Dead, and the Temple of Quetzalcoatl.

Today we will also visit the Shrine of our Lady of Guadalupe, the most visited religious site in Latin America. Built in the 16th Century, this Shrine is a wonderful example of Spanish Baroque.

In 1531 a 'Lady from Heaven' appeared to a poor Indian at Tepeyac, a hill northwest of Mexico City; she identified herself as the Mother of the True God, instructed him to have the bishop build a temple on the site and left an image of herself imprinted miraculously on his tilma. Thus was born the cult of the Virgin and Mexicans flocked to Catholicism.

Villahermosa

In this city, cobblestoned streets surrounded by majestic buildings merge into a mythical place where the light and shade and vivid colours create a special exuberance. Villahermosa was attacked by American and French invaders between 1846 and 1864, basically wiping it off the face of the earth. This explains why in this 450 year-old city, only nineteenth and twentieth century buildings and monuments are preserved. Villahermosa is a prosperous city located in the southeast of the country, in the southern area of the Gulf of Mexico; therefore, its climate is humid and tropical. The area features deep rivers, amazingly gorgeous lagoon systems, deafening waterfalls and provides the state with over 30 per cent of its water.

Aero Mexico Flight # Departing Villahermosa 8:10 PM

AM2050 Arriving Merida 9:10 PM

Mérida, the “White City” invites exploration. Today, Merida is a mestizo city that sings outdoors in the evenings, provides hailstorms at midday and offers a horse-drawn carriage tour of its Paseo Montejo in the afternoons. The colonial and French influenced architecture, Mayan language, Caribbean atmosphere and original cuisine make this a unique place.

Mérida is the gateway to Uxmal and the Puuc Zone that still bears traces of its pre-Hispanic history and the extravagance of the henequen haciendas.

The majority of those living here are descended from the Mayans, the builders of Uxmal and Chichén Itzá. Although these cities had already been abandoned by the time the Spaniards arrived, the Conquest was delayed until 1542, when Governor Francisco Montejo founded Mérida, nearly twenty years after the fall of Teotihuacan. The revolts against the colonizers lasted until 1912. During the last third of the 19th century, the henequen (sisal hemp) industry dominated everything, creating immense fortunes but fostering social unrest, as a result of which the Revolution soon acquired a powerful base in Yucatán. Following the henequen crisis, the state was diversified and nowadays tourism is one of its main activities.

When the Spaniards arrived at Chichen - Itza, it had been abandoned as a consequence of the civil war fought with Mayapan. In between 1196 and 1441 the final collapse of this culture took place in the north of the peninsula.

The conquerors found the buildings partially in ruins and their names and purpose were a mystery to the invaders.
