Tour Overview

Baccus on Holiday 8-22 June 2009

15 Day Combination Tour of one of the world’s truly great cities and the relaxed serenity of timeless Tuscany.

ROME June 8 - 15

“ROME’S pedigree is ancient, but there is nothing stuffy or exclusive about it. A sunny, youthful spirit pervades the Italian capital, and the marble-clad, ochre-washed city of emperors and popes is as alluring as ever. But Rome also has plenty of grit and rough edges that keep it real. From the relentless barrage of staggering art and architecture to the chaotic traffic and ebullient locals, Rome is a sublimely percussive place that will make your soul vibrate.” Sylvie Hogg

It's hard to say what you'll find most breathtaking about the Eternal City - the arrogant opulence of the Vatican, the timelessness of the Forum, the resonance of the Colosseum or the thrill of feeling centuries of turbulent history under your feet. The world class restaurants and lunches in the piazzas of Rome will be a special treat. It goes without saying, that the City of Rome houses thousands of years of mankind’s greatest works. We have chosen the galleries, churches, gardens and sites that are the treasure troves of the most wondrous of them.

HOTEL CAMPO DE’FIORI is a gem. Located in the Campo de’ Fiori area in the heart of both ancient and Renaissance Rome. The hotel has been chosen by The Inspired Traveller because of it’s wonderful location and terrific terrace with 360 degree views of the historical centre. Positioned just a few steps from Navona Square, San Peter, Venezia Square, the Spanish Steps, Trevi Fountain, the Colosseum and the Roman Forum.Your central base in Rome for 7 nights.

TUSCANY June 15– 22 Tuscany is a charmed land, equally blessed by the genius of man and nature, and often by the combined efforts of both. The vineyards, gently rolling hillsides, bounded by single files of darker green cypress trees, snaking sandy roads leading to rust-coloured farmhouses and rounded hilltops surmounted by towns so homogeneous as to seem one single building. Every inch of land has been sculpted, first by the elements and then by generations of inhabitants whose goals were always twofold: make the land produce as much as possible, make the land as beautiful as possible. Tuscany enchants us today because it holds together as a region, from the tiniest hamlet to Florence the Magnificent.

We have chosen as our base in Tuscany, the Val d’Orcia, a beautiful and miraculously intact valley in Southern Tuscany. Midway between Florence and Rome, it is also within easy reach of Siena, Arezzo, Perugia, Assisi and Orvieto. Renaissance and medieval gems such as Pienza, Montepulciano, Monticchiello and Montalcino are only a few miles away. The countryside abounds in lovely walks among woods and the characteristic crete senesi (clay hills); the food is among the best in Italy and famous wines such as the Vino Nobile and Brunello will be tasted in the local cellars.

Our accommodation is in private houses on the estate of La Foce - a wonderful way of discovering the Val d'Orcia at its most intimate.

The garden, designed by the English architect Cecil Pinsent, is considered a Tuscan gem and features in the beautiful new book by Australian gardner,Myles Baldwin: "PERIOD GARDENS-Landscapes for houses with history." Murdoch Books. Just published.

John Bird will assist Sarah Stegley in making your holiday in Tuscany a pleasure even Baccus would be proud of! John is an Australian who has lived in Italy for 20 years. He now resides in Val d’Orcia in Tuscany. John is fluent in Italian and all things Tuscan - food and wine in particular.Sarah is Director of The Inspired Traveller and loves Rome with a deep passion.

Despite her many visits to Rome over the last thirty years, she still finds Rome eternally fascinating.

Recent visits to Tuscany have revealed to Sarah, the true heart of the Italian countryside, and hand in hand with Rome, the combination will make for a wonderful fortnights' holiday.

Sarah and John are keen to share with you Rome and Tuscany - Baccus on Holiday.
